I enjoyed looking at a draft copy, complete with Len's hand drawn illustrations. I am presently developing curriculum to train powerplant engineers. I worked on a very early production CF6-6 engine that still had the water injection system components. There were few of the General Electric turbines that were delivered with the system. I hope an imaginative publisher will be interested in the book.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16733800869872133603noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5764631039755560338.post-11488802235818791872017-03-06T13:46:43.549+00:002017-03-06T13:46:43.549+00:00Have you considered crowd funding for the publicat...Have you considered crowd funding for the publication of the book on aero engines?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06484859614366892267noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5764631039755560338.post-63078120945148028422017-03-06T13:45:39.615+00:002017-03-06T13:45:39.615+00:00Have you considered crowd funding for the book on ...Have you considered crowd funding for the book on aero engines?
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06484859614366892267noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5764631039755560338.post-17040591335151616712014-09-11T01:37:23.358+01:002014-09-11T01:37:23.358+01:00I would urge Mr Deighton to find some medium in wh...I would urge Mr Deighton to find some medium in which to publish his thoughts, experiences and conclusions on the fall of the Soviet Union. Twenty-five years after the fall of the Iron Curtain the events still appear mysterious. As original sources recede in o the past, the scope for misinformation, whether wilful or misguided, will be immense.

With the Wars of the Soviet Succession showing no signs of settlement the views of one of the very few people able to experience the period from all sides would make vital reading, both right now and also for the benefit of future historians.Paul_Somersethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08770880188742703703noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5764631039755560338.post-5327516244364399832014-02-25T05:46:59.199+00:002014-02-25T05:46:59.199+00:00Thanks for the Deighton Dossier. I have read all but one or two of his books and have reread some of them two or three times. I prefer his early work about the nameless "boy from Burnley" and I think the Billion Dollar Brain is the most beautiful book Mr. Deighton has written, from a purely literary point of view. I remember being struck from time to time as I read some of the books that I was in the presence of a narrative innovator and that some of the devices he has used to move scenes along or to shift from scene to scene might be "firsts" in literature. Mr. Deighton is a great thriller writer but more than that, he is a great writer period, who doesn't need his genre as a qualifier. I am glad to hear he is doing well. I've spent a lot of time with him, through his books and have loved and learned from them both.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15522359377458213957noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5764631039755560338.post-52894634285480283192014-02-09T10:36:56.458+00:002014-02-09T10:36:56.458+00:00Then here's another :) This is Len talking abo...Then here's another :) This is Len talking about the planning process of writing a book. (From the The Tuscaloosa News 1972.) Those movie ads certainly 'place' us in the era. Scrolling on to the next page there's an article describing the use, in Vietnam, of a 15,000 pound, daisy cutter, bomb. Google newspapers certainly are a great resource. And now we have another snippet from the real Deighton bio - that he once ran a dress factory in east London! I always loved Len's 'fake bio' that was on some of the paperback versions of the Harry Palmer books. All though stuff about him being a control systems expert. It took me in and I think it took in Who's who?

Here's an old interview with Len from 1972 where he discusses Bomber and Close Up.

http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1817&dat=19720227&id=owMdAAAAIBAJ&sjid=QJwEAAAAIBAJ&pg=5499,4692787 Terry Kiddhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03888160718812027224noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5764631039755560338.post-48819449337769923012014-01-23T06:39:46.316+00:002014-01-23T06:39:46.316+00:00Great answers from Len. Of course there are people who have an interest in such matters, especially from someone with the authority of Len Deighton! I do wonder at Harper Collins reasons though. Most of the ‘aviation enthusiast‘ genre of book tend to take a rather blinkered view of the great names in the aviation world. (Empire of the Clouds etc) I wonder if Len’s more critical style could have something to do with the decision not to publish?

For example, I’d love to see Len’s take on the problems that Packard had with Rolls Royce’s blueprints for the Merlin engine. Packard didn’t consider them up to the standard of drawings used in volume car production and redrew them to closer tolerances rather than spend endless extra man hours hand working the engine parts to fit. (See Sir Stanley Hookers biography, not Much of an Engineer)

For anyone interested here is my blog on the topic.
http://terry-kidd.blogspot.de/2010/01/enduring-myth.html?view=timeslide

Good luck Len, in finding a more intelligent publisher.Terry Kiddhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03888160718812027224noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5764631039755560338.post-59695803702872931672014-01-22T18:09:18.474+00:002014-01-22T18:09:18.474+00:00Rob: thanks for collating and writing that up (and...Rob: thanks for collating and writing that up (and of course thanks to Len for taking the time to answer the questions in the first place). I must say though that I had to spend a good 15 minutes in Google Images trying to find examples of the covers that Len was praising so highly with the penultimate question. Some I remember, others not at all. Very interesting all round, but now back to work...

Cheers, JulianUnknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14939814526870906214noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5764631039755560338.post-1300304244817531082014-01-22T12:52:08.492+00:002014-01-22T12:52:08.492+00:00Very kind of you to say soVery kind of you to say soDeighton Dossierhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01764108300942425651noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5764631039755560338.post-16719845230003878282014-01-22T12:40:58.449+00:002014-01-22T12:40:58.449+00:00Great blog , I really love your writing style tha... Great blog , I really love your writing style that you are using for your posts and stuff, Really intersting...Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12931435777122125985noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5764631039755560338.post-20019518288930759822014-01-22T09:56:27.640+00:002014-01-22T09:56:27.640+00:00Glad you found it interesting, Giacomo!Glad you found it interesting, Giacomo!Deighton Dossierhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01764108300942425651noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5764631039755560338.post-88124671261150967312014-01-21T20:36:32.971+00:002014-01-21T20:36:32.971+00:00Great Question about the covers, and great answer ...Great Question about the covers, and great answer of Mr. Deighton.
